I have worked as a BI developer for more than 5 years. I have faced and also heard many developers talk about how each client is unique and that they must incorporate some customization to meet customer demand. Upon doing more research on this topic I found out that most of the time developers focus on beautifying the dashboard rather than providing insightful metrics. Customers only care about the numbers. A dashboard should be attractive, I am not taking anything from that but it should also be insightful. Having said that let’s jump to the point: here is how I built a single full insightful sales dashboard that more than 10 customers accepted without a single change request.

  1. Simplicity:
Keep it simple: I have attached the dashboard above and as you can see it is quite simple with just one visual,i.e. the table visual. Making it simple has helped me a lot. By designing dashboards that resemble Excel (such as table or pivot table layouts), customers who are still Excel-dependent feel more comfortable transitioning to new reporting systems. It is very convinent to extract the data into Excel using simple visuals. This one simple technique has helped me significantly. When I proposed customer this layout they felt comfortable and just went with it.
